PHILOSOPHY – Hegel

The German philosopher Hegel believed that strange and alien bits of history have much to teach us. He believed story and civilisation do not move in a straight line, so important ideas and attitudes get left behind. Please subscribe here:

  1. I find myself wondering: why should philosophy be clear and easy to understand? Why should it not be demanding, even daunting – more like thorny, perplexing poetry than limpid, crystal-clear prose? I don't think Hegel wrote horribly – I think he wrote exactly as he intended to. If it seems horrible to us, that might just reflect our ideas about how philosophy should be written – and how it should be read.

  2. 3:52 "It might only be by the 2020s that we'll find the right balance between extremes"
To put it in context: He is talking about finding the balance between too much sexual repression and being too sexually open.
Haha, I get the feeling we need more time to find this so called perfect balance.

  3. Thank you for this video. I appreciate you are willing to speak directly to what is true in Hegel's work. It's a needed influence in our modern attempts to right the wrongs of history. A wise perspective for any era.

  5. It's truly amazing how this channel, when talking about philosophers, always manages to get everything wrong. Not one true statement in this entire video. Well, ok, I guess they got Hegel's birth year right.

  6. I would like to thank you for igniting my motivation to actually attempt to read philosophy! You make these ideas digestible and amusing in presentation which keeps me glued to my seat!

  7. I see art as a natural language. We are all born into a pre-established system of expression, that relies on use of agreed upon symbols and terms. However that does not fully align with our interpretation of the human experience. Art is the kind of language a person would develop, if they woke up on an island and had to communicate with someone as illiterate as themselves. To seek intuitive meaning. To allow interpretation to be derived from the media and to be as imprecise as it was, when it was conceived. Art is an attempt to break past the restraints imposed by conventional interaction. The purpose of art is to decypher consciousness.

  8. I remember in undergrad I took Political Science 105C: Early Modern Political Thought. I was 18 years old, and the very first assignment we got was an excerpt from Hegel's Phenomonology. Now I'm in law school, and no reading has ever come as close to that first poli sci assignment. Not even close.
